Performance
What is steering your ‘Performance Ship’?
February 25, 2023

Let’s begin by discussing what I mean by the word performance. At every moment in our lives we are performing, even in sleep! Performance can be seen as the activation of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that interact together towards use, engaging in life in an innumerable number of situations. Furthermore, what we experience internally is impacted by the external world and vice-versa. Even when we are feeling confident in our performance capabilities we can easily be thrown off course by situations that challenge us. Hence, an understanding of what steers your ‘performance ship’ is essential. Specifically, what are the ‘power values’ (Fader, 2016) that support you as an athlete? Past winning or losing what brings you to your sport each and every day? How does living in accordance to your values serve to keep you mentally and physically strong? Reflecting on these are an important part of how you will steer your ‘performance ship’ towards meaningful and lasting participation in your sport of choice.
