Leadership
The Intersection of Sport and Life
March 26, 2025
In 2021 the Afghanistan Women’s National Cricket Team faced perhaps the greatest threat to their lives and even their families. They had dared to play sport and, at the same time, be very good at it. The harrowing journey they made to safety from the Taliban is one of inspiration and a tribute to the mental fortitude demonstrated by the team to dream and hope of a better life along with showing the ‘power of sport’. Often in sport and performance environments we think of leaders as visible individuals on the field with the captain’s ‘C’ on their jersey or perhaps an armband. Yet, when we step back we can recognize that every player on the team is a leader, in the context of the position they play, and more importantly, and their humanity in the hope of a better world for those oppressed. I believe it is essential to be able to step back as an athlete anywhere in the world and reflect on how you and/or your team promotes the well-being of our communities, society, and the wider world around us.
