Leadership
Reflecting on the ‘Maurice Mindset’
July 11, 2024
It has been close to a few weeks since the NHL season ended and it was almost a historic upset for the Oilers being down three games to zero. Alas, the Panthers pulled it together to take the cup! When listening to Paul Maurice before game seven he epitomized leadership with a calm, cool and collected demeanour. Among the many things he said in the short video clip (see below for link) I particularly liked his comment, “I’m not concerned about the past at all. Our plan is set.” Despite having given up a three game lead performance it is what occurs in the present and indeed Maurice talked about having the freedom come to rink and play the last game. Mindset, and its many variables, involves each individual player and the collective team playing to their identity and the ultimate goal. Mental Skills Training (MST) supports developing and sustaining a winning mindset towards success in sports, however you want to define this, and in life!
